Nitazenes

What are Nitazenes?

Nitazenes are a type of synthetic opioid which have been recently found on the Irish heroin market. They are very new to the European drug market and little is known about some of them currently. Nitazenes have been connected to a number of overdose outbreaks and overdose deaths worldwide. Many nitazenes are at least as potent as fentanyl, some are more potent.

In a review of ‘Naloxone Use in Novel Potent Opioid and Fentanyl Overdoses in Emergency Department Patients’ patients experiencing an overdose following the consumption of the nitazenes experienced cardiac arrest and death at a higher rate than those involving other substances (link).

How Can You Identify Nitazenes?

They are currently circulating in Ireland as a light brown/sandy powder or sold as heroin without the person who is buying realising the increased danger and potency. They have been found in the UK as fake benzodiazepines and oxycodone tablets (yellow or blue tablets), as well as liquid.

Harm Reduction

  • You are at risk of overdosing from injecting or smoking opiates.
  • Access Naloxone – contact your local service or doctor about accessing it.
  • Naloxone is effective in reversing overdoses associated with nitazenes, but additional doses may be needed compared to other opiates.
  • Avoid new batches & buying from new suppliers. This brings unknown risks.
  • Avoid using alone – let someone know you are using and where.
  • Test the dose by starting low and go very slow. There is an increased risk of overdose at this time.
  • Avoid using other drugs, including methadone, benzodiazepines or alcohol.
  • Look out for the signs of overdose and don’t be afraid to get medical help.
