Frontline’s North East Inner City (NEIC) alcohol hub opened in October 2022. Unlike our addiction support services in Inchicore and Bluebell, the NEIC service is focused on providing support for adults struggling with alcohol issues.

It is part of the Integrated Alcohol Service (IAS) which was established by the HSE to provide a service in an area where a gap in specific alcohol addiction services had been identified.

The team within the IAS, which includes Frontline Addiction Practitioners, provides services including medical, counselling, psychosocial interventions, one-to-one key working, care planning, and case management as well as referral to a community detox to support people seeking to address their alcohol-related problems.

Paul McMahon has been working as an Addiction Practitioner in the NEIC since 2024. Here he details what an average working day looks like for him:

“I commute to the office by train from Maynooth every day, which means a relatively early start of 6.30am. Once I get to work, and have had a much-needed coffee, I switch on my computer and have a look at my diary to get an idea of how my day is looking.

“On an average day, I meet with four clients in person and I also reach out to clients over the phone for check-ins.

“The NEIC service is located in a building that includes HSE staff and a doctor. This enables us to provide our clients with an additional level of support for their alcohol-related health needs, which is hugely beneficial to them.

“Each person that presents to our service for support has different needs and goals, and it’s my job to figure how best we can help them to get there. This can include creating a care plan for them to manage their drinking or referring them on to a detox service.

“Having grown up in the area that I’m working on, it’s a real privilege for me to help support and change the lives of the people from my community, so that they can better their lives.”
