Sobriety after alcohol addiction

Alan* had been dealing with a long-term alcohol dependency that began in his teenage years and eventually developed into a chronic daily drinking habit. Over the years, this dependency had a profound impact on nearly every aspect of his personal life—from his housing situation to his ability to maintain steady employment. Although he had attempted to address the issue two decades earlier, and experienced a brief period of abstinence following treatment, he found it difficult to sustain his sobriety and ultimately returned to drinking.

Determined to break the cycle once and for all, Alan reached out to Frontline Make Change’s alcohol-specific support service in the North Inner City, seeking guidance, support, and a way forward.

Addiction Practitioner Brian Mitchell met with Alan to explore his goals and put together a personalized care plan tailored to his needs. The initial phase of the plan focused on gradually reducing his alcohol intake over a two-week period. Once that was successfully achieved, Alan was referred to the on-site doctor, who prescribed a medically supervised Librium detox. Alongside the detox, Alan attended regular one-on-one keyworking and care planning sessions with Brian, which helped him build strategies to manage daily life and emotional challenges without turning to alcohol.

Since that first meeting, Alan has made remarkable progress and has transformed many areas of his life. He is now proudly celebrating one full year of sobriety. To help maintain his recovery, he attends regular Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meetings and is currently participating in a structured, drug and alcohol-free aftercare program that provides continued support and stability.

Alan has also received assistance with securing stable housing and is now living independently in a new apartment. With a renewed sense of hope and purpose, he is actively planning to enroll in training courses aimed at improving his skills and enhancing his chances of gaining meaningful employment in the near future.
